Prominent constitutional lawyer and National Constitutional Assembly (NCA) leader Lovemore Madhuku has escaped unhurt after his vehicle veered off a gravel road and crashed into a tree in Chiredzi on Saturday.

The accident occurred as Madhuku was travelling from Harare to attend a funeral wake for the child of a fellow NCA member.

Despite extensive damage to the vehicle, Madhuku and another occupant escaped without injuries.

The incident sparked speculation on social media, with some suggesting that the crash could have been deliberately orchestrated because of Madhuku's involvement in legal challenges against Constitutional Amendment No. 3.

However, the outspoken constitutional lawyer dismissed the allegations, insisting that the crash was an ordinary road accident and had nothing to do with his political or legal activities.

Madhuku explained that he had been rushing to reach the funeral when his vehicle lost traction on a gravel road.

Madhuku, however, rejected suggestions of foul play, saying he was fully aware of the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Madhuku is among the lawyers representing citizens contesting the constitutionality of Constitutional Amendment No. 3, which seeks to extend presidential and parliamentary terms from five to seven years.

The proposed constitutional changes have generated considerable political debate, with critics questioning their implications for democratic governance and constitutional term limits.

The Constitutional Court is scheduled to hear another challenge relating to the legislation on November 11.
