President Robert Mugabe and the First Lady, Grace Mugabe today hosted the children's independence party at the City Sports Centre in Harare.
The party gave the children, drawn from the country's ten provinces, an opportunity to interact and share views about Zimbabwe's independence on the eve of Friday's national celebrations.
The party began as early as nine in the morning with entertainment from the Police Band, which churned out music from various artists including gospel.
Some children's groups also gave performances.
The venue of the party was decorated with placards inscribed with messages congratulating Zimbabweans on attaining 34 years of self-rule.
Others carried expressions of Zimbabwe's dreams and aspirations in the economic sphere: "Kusununguka NeKubudirira Kuzere neZimasset", "Happy Birthday Zimbabwe" etc.
The children's party is a permanent feature of Zimbabwe's independence celebrations which affords the young generation a chance to meet and interact with the President.
Besides the school children from the various provinces, a special group from the Grace Mugabe Children's Home in Mazowe was also present.
The 34th Independence Day celebrations are being held under the theme: "Zimbabwe at 34: Defending our Sovereignty and Providing an Enabling Environment for Sustainable Economic Empowerment and Social Transformation."
Vice President Joice Mujuru, the Minister of Primary and Secondary Education, Lazarus Dokora, the Deputy Chief Secretaries to the President and Cabinet Justin Mupamhanga, Rtd Col Christian Katsande and Ray Ndlukula as well as officials from the Ministry of Education were among those who attended the children's party.
