RETIRED former Warriors skipper Benjani Mwaruwari could be the highest earning footballer for 2014 in Southern Africa after his former club Portsmouth has fattened his pocket with $400 000 (about 250 000 Pounds which the club owed him, according to a report by a local tabloid, B- Metro.
According to foreign media reports Pompey had paid about 24 player owed money from the previous regimes - including Mwaruwari. The club, state same reports, is now debt free two years ahead of schedule after paying off 7 million Pounds in the last 18 months.
A close associate of the dreadlocked player confirmed that the player received $400 000 from Pompey.
"He (Benjani) recently got his dues from Portsmouth, he pocketed something close to $400 000," said a source quoted by B-Metro.
If these reports are anything to go by, Mwaruwari has arguably become the richest Zimbabwean export.
