Snakehead fish! A rare catch stuns Chinehasha Village

Mr Simango had a memorable day out fishing at the iconic Lilstock Dam in Chinehasha Village. His prized catch - a massive Snakehead fish (Hunga) - had heads turning at Chinehasha Business Centre, where he proudly put it on display for sale. With its cylindrical body and sharp teeth, the fish resembles a serpent in almost every way. This particular one stretched close to one and a half metres in length.

Business came to a screeching halt as villagers jostled to catch a glimpse of the unusual creature.

From afar, the uninitiated would sprint away, befriending the wind in an attempt to widen the distance between "predator" and "prey." But a closer look reveals not a monster, but a delicious and highly prized species of fish.

In New Zealand, word has it that experienced Tamariki catch snakeheads in abundance, grill them over evening bonfires, and sell them at markets where they fetch high prices and sell fast.

In most parts of Chiweshe, however, the fatty snakehead is elusive and notoriously difficult to catch. It puts up a spirited fight before surrendering its habitat. So Mr Simango had every reason to walk with a spring in his step. Cloaked in an aura of invincibility, he lifted his "snakey" catch high, scouting for the highest bidder.

My wafer‑thin wallet could not allow me to participate - but there I was. Even non‑footballers still go to Anfield.

In rural Chiweshe, the Hunga is a delicacy mostly reserved for elders. The *ama2k* cannot be convinced that it is not a snake. Little do they know that it is one of the most sought‑after fish species.

Those who catch snakeheads usually rely on meaty baits - pieces of beef, chicken, smaller fish, and even small birds.

So next time you're at the market, remember: not everything that looks like a snake is a snake. It could be a fresh or dried snakehead waiting to send your taste buds into a joyful spin.
