Controversial preacher Alistar Chibanda has been arrested and is reportedly in police custody over allegations of circulating false and defamatory information related to the popular Doek & Slay event.

The arrest is understood to have followed a series of social media posts made over recent days in which Chibanda allegedly criticised and disparaged the women-only cultural and entertainment event through messages, images and videos.

In one post, Chibanda claimed that no "wife material" attends Doek & Slay parties. In another, he condemned images showing women touching a male security guard, describing the behaviour as inappropriate. Writing in Shona, he accused attendees of indecency and linked their conduct to alcohol consumption, adding that such behaviour was condemned by God and should not be defended.

Following the incident, Doek & Slay organisers issued a statement confirming that Chibanda had been arrested, saying the matter had been formally reported to law enforcement authorities.

"Doek and Slay has noted with concern the circulation of sustained false and defamatory information attributed to Alistar Chibanda, which is intended to damage the reputation and credibility of the Doek and Slay brand," the organisers said.

They added that the individual concerned is now in police custody and that the case is proceeding through the appropriate legal channels.

The organisers further emphasised that Doek & Slay is a registered and legally protected trademark and warned that any attempts to misrepresent, defame or unlawfully exploit the brand would not be tolerated.

"We remain firm in our commitment to safeguarding our brand, our patrons, and our stakeholders," the statement read. "Doek and Slay remains committed to excellence, professionalism, integrity and creating a safe space for women."

Doek & Slay is a women-only cultural and entertainment event launched in Harare in 2023. It celebrates African identity, fashion, music and sisterhood, and has grown in popularity, attracting large crowds and significant public attention across Zimbabwe.

Police have not yet released further details regarding the charges Chibanda may face.
