SEVEN people died, six of them on the spot in two separate road accidents that occurred in Masvingo on Saturday and Tuesday, police have confirmed.

Acting Masvingo police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa said two haulage trucks were involved in a head-on collision on Tuesday and both drivers died on the spot.

He said one haulage truck was being driven by a 46-year-old man and the other one by a man who is yet to be identified as he was crushed beyond recognition.

"Yesterday (Tuesday) at around 4.40AM a man was driving a haulage truck with foreign registration towards Beitbridge. Upon reaching the 143km peg along the same road, he encroached into the lane of another truck with South African registration heading in the opposite direction towards Masvingo resulting in a head-on collision," said the police spokesperson.

"The two drivers died on the spot. The driver driving a South Africa registered truck was crushed beyond recognition."

Their bodies were taken to Neshuro Hospital mortuary for postmortem.

Asst Insp Dhewa said in another accident, four people died on the spot and another one died on admission to Silveira Mission Hospital when a Toyota Noah they were travelling in hit a pre-cast wall in Bikita on Saturday.

The vehicle which was being driven by Comfort Tanaka, 20, of Mupakwa Village under Chief Mukanganwi in Bikita was travelling from Nyika to Zaka and had seven people, including the driver, on board when tragedy struck.

"Upon reaching the 16km peg along Nyika–Zaka Road the vehicle burst its left rear tyre leading to Tanaka losing control of the vehicle. It overturned several times and rammed into a borehole durawall killing four passengers on the spot and seriously injuring three. The injured were rushed to Silveira Mission Hospital where one died upon admission," said Asst Insp Dhewa

Two other injured people, including the Toyota Noah driver were said to be in a critical condition.

Asst Insp Dhewa identified the deceased as Samson Shayamano, 62, of Manzunzu village under Chief Marozva in Bikita, Emmanuel Gora, 58, Mavis Gora, 64, all of Pikai Village under Chief Ndanga in Zaka and one Taurai, whose detailed particulars are unknown.

A female adult is also yet to be identified.

"Culpable homicide charge is preferred on the driver. Indications are that he was speeding. We advise motorists against speeding. They should drive their vehicles with due care and at safe speeds," he said

He said the vehicle in the accident was extensively damaged and taken to the Vehicle Inspection Department (VID) in Masvingo for inspection.
