Grace Mugabe against illegal vending

FIRST Lady Amai Grace Mugabe does not support illegal vending and is fully behind measures adopted by Government to restore order in urban areas, Zanu-PF Women's League spokesperson Monica Mutsvangwa said yesterday.

This follows attempts by the private media to soil Amai Mugabe's name, who is also the Zanu-PF Secretary for Women's League, saying she had given the vendors the green light to operate illegally.

In all her speeches on vendors, Amai Mugabe never supported illegal hawking, but condemned the consumption of goods confiscated from vendors by law enforcement agents.

Addressing International Women's Day in March, the First Lady warned police against harassing the vendors with a view to seizing their goods.

She said: "Mapurisa, please mapurisa! Ngatiregerei kutorera vanhu zvinhu zvavo. If they are selling at undesignated places, tell them peacefully, they will understand."

Mutsvangwa said at no point did Amai Mugabe support the illegal influx of vendors in the CBDS.

"Such action is in contravention of existing statutes and as such, there is no way she would ever want to be tainted with such nefarious actions," she said.

"First Lady is one and the same with the concerned ministers and other Government agencies who are working hard to rid the city centres of the scourge.

"She is fully behind all efforts being done to set up properly designated vendor premises so that business can be conducted within the confines of the relevant statutes and by-laws."

Mutsvangwa said some opposition political players were trying to twist the First Lady's statements in a bid to incite the vendors.

"She (Amai Mugabe) also strongly denounces opportunist opposition political figures who are whipping up irresponsible emotions on the removal of vendors from these urban areas," she said.

"It is a dangerous game to encourage lawlessness. The peace-loving and law-abiding people of Zimbabwe do not take heed to this manifest lawless exhortation."

Mutsvangwa said Government was working on a raft of far-reaching economic initiatives, statutes and programmes to over-haul the environment of doing business and bring vitality to the economy.

"Just like all over the world, vendors are part of the economic landscape of any national economy, that is why the First Lady stands with law-abiding vendors," Mutsvangwa said.
