A recording of Zanu-PF national political commissar Saviour Kasukuwere misleading the eastern region that funds were about to be availed in the Marange-Zimunya Community Share Ownership Trust (CSOT) has surfaced.

In the May 2013 recording, Kasukuwere is heard categorically stating that he had conducted meetings with the diamond miners who agreed to disburse the $50 million during his tenure as Indigenisation Minister.  He was addressing the Zimbabwe Local Government Association (ZILGA) annual congress in Mutare.

"I can assure you your funds are now coming, the community trust has now been registered and it has been approved.  We have sat with the companies to say we must commit and we did commit. We must now implement and ensure the communities benefit from those resources," Kasukuwere is heard saying.

He also warned that the trust must be operationalised as there was a risk that the diamonds might run out. A year later, the alluvial gems actually did - suggesting that the minister might have had inside information regarding the lifespan of the diamond deposits.

He left the indigenisation portfolio without finalising the matter - prompting critics to suggest that he was making cheap political statements to avoid further interrogation. He was recently hauled before the parliamentary portfolio committee on indigenisation and economic empowerment, where he accused the committee chairperson Justice Mayor Wadyajena, the MP for Gokwe-Nembudziya, of witch hunting.

Instead of responding to questions, Kasukuwere accused Wadyajena of being used to fight factional wars when he had no solid political footing.
