An ungrateful Chinhoyi hitch-hiker and former convict has been arrested in connection with the gruesome murder of a 90-year-old farmer who had offered him a lift last week on Monday evening.
Kudakwashe Nduma appeared before the Chinhoyi magistrate, Brenda Dhliwayo for initial remand hearing, and was remanded in custody to the 8th of July.
He is facing murder and robbery charges.
In his cautioned statement before Magistrate Dhliwayo, Nduma said he pounced on Mr Bertrum Gardner after he had heard in the bar that his victim used to move around with large sums of cash especially during month ends.
He therefore flagged down for a lift upon seeing Mr Gardner's Ford Ranger vehicle, and asked for transport to Chinhoyi.
Along the way, he told his victim that the vehicle had a tyre puncture and as soon as Mr Gardner stopped the car, he throttled and dragged him out of the vehicle before stricking him on the head twice with a boulder.
The murder suspect then allegedly dragged his victim's body into the bush, before undressing the body and driving away in the Ford Ranger which he intended to sell.
Nduma was arrested on Saturday and was putting on Mr Gardener's clothes.
He was also in possession of his victim's cellphone and wallet.
Mr Gardner was in possession of US$225 at the time he was murdered.
