Zanu-PF Secretary for Administration Ignatius Chombo has downplayed his party by-election defeat saying "one swallow does not make a summer".
The ruling party lost a by-election in Norton for the first time since 1980.
Zanu PF's Ronald Chindedza lost to independent candidate Temba Mliswa.
Mliswa garnered 8 927 votes against Chindedza's 6 192.
Said Chombo "Not really, because we have won so many by-elections and this was just an odd one. One swallow does not make a summer".
He said the party that dished out thousands of residential stands to voters at the last minute will come back strongly.
"After any election, the province and leadership should go back and make an honest assessment of the pros and cons, dwell on those issues that did not go well and cleanse those areas that need cleansing," he said.
