Mugabe must stop embarrassing himself - PDP

President Mugabe must resign and allow Zimbabwe to open the new chapter; his legacy of the past 37 years is that of failure, mediocrity and that of sowing division so as to maintain his grip on power.
It is this unbridled hunger for power which saw him reject once again the chance to step down yesterday when he went live on national television to make a shocking statement reflecting his distorted understanding of the status quo.
With the masses showing displeasure on Saturday, the army putting him under house arrest and his own party rejecting him both at Provincial and National levels, Mugabe should have done the honourable thing, that of stepping down.
It has always been clear to us in the PDP that President Mugabe had lost control of the state as we wrote in our document titled DEFINING OUR TRANSITION: A CASE FOR THE NATIONAL TRANSITIONAL AUTHORITY IN ZIMBABWE.
""Mugabe has lost his grip on power anyway and the security sector has taken control."
At list his hunger for power then created sufficient illusions which made it difficult for him to realise that the carpet was being swept under his feet. Surely these illusions cannot continue under the circumstances.
Now that Mugabe has refused to step down in the face of striking rejection by Zimbabweans both at home and abroad, Zimbabweans must engage in lawful means of removing him from office, these actions must be multifaceted.
Impeachment proceedings in Parliament must be instituted as provided in section 97 of the constitution.
Parties must resist the temptation of instant coffee , the procedure outlined in the constitution must be followed to avoid setbacks. It is also important for ZANUPF not to polarise the process otherwise a disastrous outcome undesirable to the general masses may occur.
While this process is taking places street actions must continue, we are in full support of the process taking place at Africa Unity square, Zimbabweans are finally reclaiming their democratic right to protest peacefully as enshrined in the constitution.
Beyond the impeachment and the protests those related to Mugabe must also encourage him to leave peacefully; Zimbabweans have had enough of him.
Finally, the PDP restates the need to construct an all-inclusive roadmap of return to legitimacy.
A transitional framework which must attend to the urgent needs of the economy and holistic political reforms leading to a free and fair election must be put in place.
Zimbabweans must get a chance to elect their leaders freely. We share this view with our partners in the MDC Alliance.
Failure to do so may result in the self-replication of the status quo; a creation of a democratic and functional state is the only way to avoid the temptation to use the gun as the arbiter in the future.
