Girl dies after eating okra

VILLAGERS in Tsholotsho were left shell-shocked last week after a 10 year old girl died after eating isitshwala with okra in a suspected food poisoning case.
The deceased, Samantha Ndlovu who was staying with her grandmother, Belinda Mhlanga, aged 56 and two other siblings Tholine Ncube (10) and Reyland Sibanda (7) retired to bed after eating sadza and okra.
On the same night at around 11pm the children started complaining of stomach pains and diarrhoea.
However, the deceased's condition deteriorated and she died before any assistance could be found.
Acting Matabeleland North Police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Mandlenkosi Ndlovu confirmed the incident saying the body had since been taken to Mpilo Hospital for post-mortem to ascertain the cause of death.
"I can confirm that Samantha Ndlovu aged 10 died after succumbing to severe stomach pains at around 2300hrs after eating okra prepared by her grandmother on 25 April. Her two siblings were however taken to Tsholotsho hospital where they are admitted. The body was taken to Mpilo mortuary for post-mortem as foul play is suspected. Investigations are underway," said Insp. Ndlovu.
Meanwhile, Tholine and Reyland were taken to Tsholotsho Hospital where they are admitted while investigations are still in progress.
The incident has set tongues wagging in chief Mahlathini's area with some suspecting witchcraft.
