THE Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (Potraz) will today start holding consumer awareness campaigns in Bulawayo on telecommunications services.

In a notice, Potraz said the awareness campaign will start today at Gunya shops in Mahatshula suburb and end on Saturday in Makokoba suburb.

On Wednesday the team will be at Chigumira shops in Luveve suburb and at Cowdray Park terminus.

On Thursday, the campaign will be held at Sekusile and Munyoro shops in Nkulumane suburb, before proceeding to Masunda and Mountain View shops in Lobengula suburb the following day.

Potraz public affairs manager Sibonginkosi Muteyiwa yesterday said the campaigns are meant to educate members of the public on telecommunications consumer rights.

She said they have been mandated by the government to carry out the exercise.

"We're aware that people haven't been happy with a number of issues pertaining to poor service by many telecommunications operators. People have been complaining of their money being confiscated by mobile phone operators as well as calls being dropped off while the conversation would be ongoing. One of our mandates is consumer protection. This is the reason why we're holding such campaigns in all provinces," said Muteyiwa.

"Residents should also be aware and be educated of their responsibilities. They must be responsible for paying their bills on time to operators to enable them to get good service. They shouldn't expect good quality service when they haven't paid their bills."

She added that operators such as DHL and Swift should also provide good quality service to residents and make sure that parcels are not lost on the way.

Muteyiwa said after the campaign, residents would be aware of the services offered by Potraz and where to go when they have problems concerning telecommunications issues.

She said similar campaigns have previously been held in Masvingo, Mashonaland Central, Manicaland, Mashonaland West and Matabeleland North provinces.
