Kariba on high Cholera alert

The Kariba District disaster preparedness team held an emergency meeting this Monday at the District Administrator's boardroom where all heads of departments and other critical players on service delivery attended to look into all aspects regards preparedness on dealing with the cholera pandemic.
The Kariba District Medical Doctor Godwin Muza stated that so far there were no reported cases and the health personal are always on standby for any such eventuality.
The Municipality of Kariba has also put in place a mechanism that would make sure that cholera will not see life in Kariba.
Water has continued to be treated with quality tests having been increased to twice weekly.
Solid waste is being collected daily at the market places though challenges on the service vehicle fleet are being faced by the council.
Issues to do with vegetables and food handlers were discussed with a certainty that any sells by illegal handlers will not be tolerated and have to stop hence forthwith. The schools feeding program will continue with the Ministry of Health supervising and monitoring the processes regards the cleanliness that are required as a precautionary measure.
A concern on fisheries was discussed with measures being put in place for Municipality to make sure that no one fishes in the sewer ponds as it could become a source of the outbreak.
Police has acknowledged being ready to assist in dealing with such cases at any time should the responsible authority face any resistance or fail to curb such dodgy activities.
The meeting challenged the Municipality to make sure that they provide safe water throughout the suburbs as well as deal with garbage collection on time. The District Administrator Mr Witness Kufa highlighted that every local authority has a civil protection budget for such emergencies according to their annual budget submissions and the two local authorities which are Nyaminyami Rural District and Kariba Municipality have to utilise such.
Most heads who contributed expressed their readiness to keep cholera out and away from the ultimate tourist destination Kariba with suggestions that toll free numbers will be put in place.
Everyone should be on high alert and be on the lookout of each other so that no life is lost.
Awareness campaigns on how to deal with cholera regards prevention were mapped and a road show is on the pipeline.
Stakeholders were called on to contribute with any resources, campaign material and also assist the transport committee headed by Mr Chaparapata with both vehicles and fuel specifically for the sole purpose.
The Kariba community based organisations were thanked for the role they have continued to play regards cleanup campaigns with some having adopted specific areas.
This has made Kariba one of the smartest towns of our nation, companies and other stakeholders were also encouraged to consider joining such community programs.
