Embattled Nikuv installed president of Zimbabwe has both failed to plan to build a nation in and the same breath has planned to fail the people of Zimbabwe.
According to Amon Ndlovu, an exiled Zimbabwe politician who has had stints in the Zimbabwean civil service, nationhood is a gradual process and neither is it perimetered by laws but by a sense of belonging.
"A nation is a grouping of people who are abstractly bound by their beliefs, values and an inseparable sense of belonging. It is the spirit of nationhood that binds people together - a cause that make people subscribe to the same ethos, an invaluable flag, universal anthem and submitting to one sacrosanct constitution. All national symbols are respected regardless of political, social or religious affiliation or beliefs."
The whole concept of nationhood is non existant in Zimbabwe, in its place there is institutionalized regionalism and tribalism. Prospects of success or any positive moves in Zimbabwe are fettered upon one's background. Political patronage is a determining factor sandwiched with an insatiable nepotistic value system.
Nationhood remains a pipe dream in Zimbabwe, will it be in our life time ? Rodrick Chimombe, Sithatshisiwe Dube, Aleck Anderson , Brighton Maravanyika - are they people forming a nation or people from one country? We need a nation Where Diamond Chadya and Jillian Dube meet Vimbai Mavherudze and all feel proud to be one---- Tsvangirai please deliver NATIONHOOD!
To Mugabe the people of Matabeleland are an inconvenience to his tribal supremacy. The very unfortunate classification of Zimbabweans according to a tribal matrix have resulted in serious disparities with the developmental configurations in Zimbabwe.
In direct contrast to the status quo, Bongani Mathe, the founding MDC T Provincial Youth Assembly organizing secretary for Bulawayo Province had a totally severed view of the tribal question in Zimbabwe with regards to nationhood.
"Zimbabwe is unitary state and we all subscribe to the same values and beliefs. Joshua Nkomo was a unifier and he was generally accepted by all Zimbabweans regardless of region or tribe. Sensing defeat the cunning and divisive Mugabe capitalized on the tribal card and in the same process portrayed Nkomo as a terrorist. I do not wanna revist the sad past but truly Gukurahundi is a sad reality of our past. I can speak all major Zimbabwean languages and I am a founding member of a political party that preaches equal opportunities for all."
Morgan Tsvangirai faces the seemingly insurmountable task which is to build a long divided nation, a nation fragmented with an entrenched tribal beneficiation system that equates apartheid at first glance though surpassing it at closer interrogation.
Strides had already been made despite the tough challenges still ahead. On the political front, it is now easy for Precious Mutete to spend a weekend with Rita Tshabalala, Sharon Tashaya can easily confide in Giyani Dube and never is it surprising any more for Mncedisi Bhebhe to appoint Tyanai Masiya as his election agent in the coming parliamentary election.
To Mugabe, a united and purposeful nation is a direct threat to his dynastic ambitions. The Tsvangirai era bring hopes of a new nation. Battling emotions a leading political figure, Abishai Mpofu gave his vision for a nation, "My dream is that for the Zimbabwe nation. I do not want to be judged by my name or where I come from, neither do I want to be given opportunities because of my region of origin but on merit. I would like to rise on merit and also on my attributes. It is painful for Adolf Jamela, Milton Matshazi , Trust Ndlovu to see the reality of them never surpassing certain success ceilings just because of their surnames. How will I explain to my children that we cannot rise beyond Vice President if ever appointed? How will my children understand, wont they blame for being in the wrong caste? We need equal opportunities. I pray that the vision of nationhood shall come to reality."
Relaxed by the beach in Durban, Nhamo Chikowore and Natalie Tembo in between sips of a good teenager whisky they pondered upon the dream of a true Zimbabwe nation. Exasperated and evenly alternating pessimism and optimism – the two firebrand politicians bemoaned the murderous legacy of Mugabe and his gangsters. To break the hard talk as they replayed the divisive Gukurahundi era – both blamed the power hungry moron engulfed in the person of Mugabe. "Hopefully Tsvangirai shall introduce the dispensation where Tangai Marufu and Emmanuel Banda shall have equal opportunities. With credit to Dutch courage, much was discussed in a bid to build a new nation under the stewardship of Morgan Tsvangirai.
In the words of Zimbabwe's most popular politician, Dr. Morgan Tsvangirai, "We need to build a nation. We shall all by reflex feel belonging to. It shall take no effort, coercion or persuasion for one to be proudly Zimbabwean. All Zimbabweans shall enjoy equal opportunities regardless of creed, political affiliation, gender, color or any other segregating characteristics used by the current regime. Our nation shall exploit the experiences, skills, abilities, sacrifices, capacity and qualities of all in the best interests of us all. We shall proudly sing the national anthem whilst solemnly hoisting our flag – we shall positively invest and have faith in our constitution and it shall be our sacred governance charter."
Zimbabwe is yet to achieve the nationhood status and the hope lies squarely on the shoulders of Morgan Tsvangirai. One day it shall be a real marvel, to see the sons of Samuel Mavhunga, Joel Marere, Oscar Madanhi, Edward Mutondo, Zinhanga, and Misheck Marowa's daughter speaking pure Ndebele, Nambya, Tonga, Ndau and Venda in our beloved Zimbabwe--- May it be so!
Zimbabwe shall be my pride on this day when Stanly Mutambiranwa attends a funeral in Filabusi and he drinks with them addresses the elders in their language – not to be outdone how shall it be to see Gilbert Chamunorwa turning back the hands of time, becomes a teenager and he chases girls in Lupane writing them letters from Budiriro blending his broken Ndelele with his Shona. How shall it be for Douglas Chiganze to negotiate for his son's marriage to Sibongile Nkomo's daughter conversing in pure Ndebele with Webster Matutu Mari assisting in the marriage rites accompanied by an elated Patrick Mubaiwa to dances till he sweats?
To Mugabe, nationhood had always been a threat to his imperial goals no wonders why to him "Father Zimbabwe was his arch enemy. May Morgan Tsvangirai know and understand the task ahead of him and not disappoint the legions of people who still have high hopes for the NATION OF ZIMBABWE!!!!
