Benjani Mwaruwari has signed a one-season contract at Bidvest Wits, joining fellow veteran Matthew Booth at the team for next season, the club announced on Saturday.

Mwaruwari joins Wits at the end of a six-month spell with relegated Chippa United, who he walked out on them before the end of their promotion-relegation playoff programme was completed last month.

The former Zimbabwe captain turns 35 next month but is highly regarded by new Wits coach Gavin Hunt, who tried to sign him this time last year when he was in charge at SuperSport United.

Booth, who was at the end of his contract at Ajax Cape Town, signed last week at the age of 36.

The pair will drastically increase the average age at Wits, who were fourth in the Absa Premiership last season and have lofty ambitions for the new campaign.

Mwaruwari's arrival comes after a career that saw him start in South Africa at Jomo Cosmos before going on to play in Switzerland, France and England, where he played Premier league football for Portsmouth, Blackburn Rovers, Manchester City and Portsmouth, again.

His signing at Wits follows the arrival of Booth and Musa Bilankulu from Lamontville Golden Arrows.
