Liverpool begins to be hit by a crisis

Liverpool manager Arne Slot is under mounting pressure after suffering a third consecutive defeat, raising fresh doubts about the balance and direction of his squad.

The reigning Premier League champions, who opened the season with seven straight wins, were stunned 0-1 by Crystal Palace before falling to Galatasaray in the Champions League. In Istanbul, Victor Osimhen's first-half penalty and a dramatic late strike from substitute Estevao sealed a 2-1 loss, leaving The Reds reeling.

The defeats have cost Liverpool top spot, with Arsenal overtaking them in the league table. Despite registering 16 attempts on goal in their latest outing, Slot's men failed to score, intensifying concerns over their attacking efficiency and overall structure.

Club legend Jamie Carragher was blunt in his assessment, warning that Liverpool's weaknesses had been evident from the start of the season. "He (Florian Wirtz) is not going to be a success at all. He is a young player, just coming to a new league and there is still a long way to go. But for now, he needs to be removed from the starting lineup," Carragher said. He added that the team must recover last season's defensive solidity and rebuild confidence, describing their current state as "a bit of a mess."

Liverpool's summer spending spree of nearly £450 million has yet to deliver results. Big-money signings Florian Wirtz (£116m from Bayer Leverkusen) and Alexander Isak (£125m) have struggled to adapt, while Hugo Ekitike, who has only three league goals, is serving a suspension after a red card.

The defensive department has also faltered. Ibrahima Konate has drawn heavy criticism, and 17-year-old Giovanni Leoni suffered a serious knee injury on his debut. To compound matters, first-choice goalkeeper Alisson Becker is sidelined with injury, leaving Slot with limited options.

Liverpool now face a crucial test against Chelsea this weekend, with pressure building on Slot to halt the slide and restore confidence to a squad that looks increasingly fragile.
