Mauritius 0 - 3 Zimbabwe
The Warriors new coach, Ian Gorowa has made a flying start to his campaign after leading his charges to a 3-nil victory over Mauritius in a first leg, first round African Nations Championship qualifier played in Mauritius on Sunday.
A brace by Nelson Mazivisa and one from Simba Sithole ensured Zimbabwe walked out of George 5 Stadium with their heads held high.
Mazivisa gave Zimbabwe the lead in the 15th minute with a header before half-time, before substitute, Sithole fired the Warriors to a 2-nil lead in the 60th minute.
Mazivisa completed the rout with another header in the 86th minute.
In a post match interview, Gorowa said he was happy his charges started on the right footing.
Gorowa also heaped praises on the boys, saying they showed amazing commitment and played to instructions even under a difficult muddy pitch as it was raining lightly throughout the match.
The Warriors will now return home and try to utilise home advantage in the return match next weekend.
Hopes are now high Zimbabwe will go for an outright win to ease into the second round where they are likely to meet the winner between Zambia and Botswana.
The Warriors' win would bring a smile on the face of local fans who had witnessed poor results under the reign of Germany coach, Klaus Dieter Pagels.
The team lost home (4-2) and away (2-1) to Egypt in World Cup qualifier matches, before another loss to Guinea (1-0).
The Warriors also lost two matches to Zambia by the identical 2-nil result, the latest of which was in the final of the COSAFA Cup.
Wins against Botswana (2-1) and Lesotho (2-1) and two draws against Malawi were the only positive local fans had to smile about before Gorowa took over.
