Manchester City have come closer to stealing defender Dani Alves away from Barcelona, as there have been reports that the Brazilian and his club have failed to reach an agreement over a new contract.

Apparently, Alves is unsatisfied with his weekly salary, which places him way behind team mates Lionel Messi, Xavi Hernandez, and David Villa in terms of earnings. The former Sevilla player is however regarded as the best right-back by many, but it has been said that rising financial problems at Barcelona have made the Blaugrana unable to elevate Alves' income to the standard he desires.

Should the player keep refusing to renew his contract at Barca'as it is said'then he will be enabled to leave the Catalans for free in 2012; causing the defending Spanish League champions to lose him without getting anything in return. Looking at the financial state of the club, this is not something Los Cules would want to do; hence, it appears an offer from Manchester City this summer could solve the issue.

Meanwhile, Coach Pep Guardiola has dismissed rumours upon Dani Alves' "newly-created transfer saga", insisting that there is absolutely no problem between the members of Barcelona's board and the star. Speaking to Barca's official website, Guardiola declared: "As far as I know, negotiations haven't broken down.

"I don't think the situation will distract him either, although if that does happen, we will all help him. But his form hasn't dipped at all since he began talking with the club about this (new contract)."
