Lorraine Drive re‑opened

Lorraine Drive has been re‑opened to the public following rehabilitation works, with Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Felix Tapiwa Mhona officially commissioning the road yesterday.

The 3.2‑kilometre stretch, constructed three years ago by Fossil Construction, had faced widespread criticism after it deteriorated rapidly, prompting concerns over substandard workmanship.

Speaking at the re‑opening ceremony, Minister Mhona said he was pleased that the contractor had corrected its earlier mistakes and delivered a road that now meets the required standards.

“Finally, Lorraine Drive has been opened to traffic. It was one of the detour roads used during the SADC meetings. Heavy traffic was directed onto this particular stretch, which could not accommodate the volume, and it eventually collapsed. This gave citizens reasonable grounds to question how the road had been constructed.

“We assured the citizens that the contractor would redo the work, and today we are witnessing this wonderful piece of work. The Second Republic, championed by His Excellency President Mnangagwa, takes issues of quality seriously. If you do not meet the standard, we mandate you to redo the work,” Minister Mhona said.

Harare Mayor Jacob Mafume, who also attended the event, urged motorists to respect road rules and help preserve the newly rehabilitated road.

“Now that this road has been opened to us, it is our duty to follow road rules and ensure it remains in good condition because all standards have been met in constructing it,” Mafume said.
