Johannesburg - A couple died on Sunday morning due to a fire in the Kya Sand informal settlement, in north west Johannesburg, South Africa, Sapa reported.
The fire began around 02:00 and was believed to have started in the man and woman's shack, said spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi.
The fire ended up gutting 19 other shacks, destroying 20 in total.
The cause of the fire was not known and would be investigated.
"Disaster management officials are on site to start facilitating the relief process to the affected families," said Mulaudzi.
"We are concerned as the authorities by the number of shack fires this weekend in the City of Johannesburg. We [have] responded to about four fire incidences (Diepsloot, Roodepoort, George Gogh, Kya Sand)."
Emergency services encouraged communities living in informal settlements to look after their heating and lighting appliances, such as paraffin stoves and candles.
