INSIZA - Thomas Meikles Pagamsa Primary School in Shangani, Matabeleland South, held a vibrant Prize-Giving Ceremony on Monday, celebrating academic excellence and community support in Ward 23, Insiza North.
Led by Headmaster Dumisani Thodlana, the school was praised for its well‑organised function, which recognised learner achievements across a wide range of categories.
The event was graced by guest of honour, Biton Ncube, CEO of New Eclipse Mine and a prominent local businessman, who arrived with a convoy of luxury vehicles. Also in attendance were Mine Manager Mandla Ncube (Cde Bhova), New Eclipse Mine workers, school committee members, representatives from other schools in Insiza North, Ward 23 ZANU PF leadership, the local councillor, miners, businesspeople and residents.
Speaking at the ceremony, Mine Manager Mandla Ncube emphasised community responsibility in supporting the school.
"The school belongs to you parents and residents. Everyone should be hands‑on in the construction of the school and guard jealously its premises. As residents we should pay school fees," he said.
He pledged that any New Eclipse Mine employee failing to pay school fees would have the amount deducted directly from their salary.
On behalf of the guest of honour, Mandla Ncube announced a special donation: roofing materials for a new classroom block and 50 bags of cement, already purchased and set for delivery on 5 December. He further pledged that New Eclipse Mine would provide trucks and fuel for school programmes, including sports and trips, at no cost to the school.
Responding to a request from Vendors4ED Chairlady T. Mafu, Ncube also promised truck assistance for the construction of a local vending mall, provided vendors supply fuel.
In his own address, Biton Ncube reflected on his roots in Shangani Ward 23 and his commitment to uplifting the community.
"I was born and grew up in Shangani Ward 23. I learned from this very same school. God has lifted me up to serve my community and I will continue to motivate educators and strengthen community efforts in uplifting our school and local projects," he said.
The ceremony ended on a high note, with prize winners congratulated and learners encouraged to continue striving for excellence. All attendees, including schoolchildren, were treated to lunch and refreshments.
Headmaster Thodlana expressed pride and gratitude for the mine's support, describing the donation as a "special gift" to the school.
The progress of New Eclipse Mine has been linked to the broader policies of President Emmerson Mnangagwa, who has promoted local miners as part of national development.
