The Ministry of Health and Child Care says it is liaising with the treasury to speed up the unfreezing of posts to ensure all unemployed nurses are recruited to improve the nurse-patient ratio in line with international standards.
This emerged during the 2013 Harare Central Hospital Schools of Nursing and Mid-wifery annual graduation and prize giving ceremony where the Deputy Minister of Health and Child Care, Dr Paul Chimedza expressed misgivings at the plight of unemployed nurses.
Dr Chimedza implored the nurses to maintain a high degree of professionalism even when conditions of service are not to government's expectations as people's lives depend on the dedication of health care professionals.
The Harare Central Hospital, through its school, pioneered a paediatric nurse training programme in Zimbabwe in line with the hospital's drive to eradicate infant mortality and improve maternal health care provision.
207 registered general nurses, 19 operation theatre nurses, eight intensive care and 84 mid wives graduated with honours in their related programmes during the 2013 edition of the graduation and prize giving ceremonies.
