THE Minister of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture, Anselem Sanyatwe, has described Zimbabwe's stunning victory over Australia at the ICC Men's T20 World Cup as a "moment of pride" and a strong signal of the country's growing stature in international sport.

Sanyatwe lauded the Chevrons' resilience following their 23-run triumph over the former world champions at R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, Sri Lanka.

"Zimbabwe went into the match as underdogs, but the Chevrons showed talent, determination, and a fighting spirit to secure one of the tournament's biggest upsets," the minister wrote on X. "This victory is more than just a win on the field. It is an inspiration for the next generation of sportsmen and women. Blessing Muzarabani, keep on blazing!"

Fast bowler Blessing Muzarabani was the star of the match, claiming four wickets for just 17 runs, his best T20I figures. He was well supported by Brad Evans, who took three wickets for 23 runs, while Wellington Masakadza and Ryan Burl added a wicket each to bowl Australia out for 146 in 19.3 overs. Zimbabwe had earlier posted 169 for two after electing to bat first.

The win gives Zimbabwe two wins from two matches in Group B, having opened their campaign with an eight-wicket victory over Oman. The Chevrons now face Ireland in Kandy on Tuesday before returning to Colombo to take on hosts Sri Lanka. The top two teams from each group advance to the Super Eight stage.

Zimbabwe had missed qualification for the previous T20 World Cup in 2022, held in the United States and West Indies, but are determined to re-establish themselves among the leading cricketing nations. At their last appearance, they reached the Super 12 stage.

The minister also highlighted the importance of government support in Zimbabwe Cricket's recent successes, including backing development programmes and guarantees for hosting major international tournaments for both the men's and women's game.

This historic win is expected to boost morale and inspire young athletes across the country, reinforcing Zimbabwe's potential on the global sporting stage.
