A 14-year-old boy who embarked on a car theft spree that saw him steal four Honda Fit vehicles, including one parked at a police station, has been sentenced to three years' imprisonment at Whawha Prison near Gweru.

The juvenile, whose identity cannot be disclosed for legal and ethical reasons, appeared before Bulawayo Regional Magistrate Ms Patience Ururu, where he pleaded guilty to four counts of motor vehicle theft.

However, he was convicted on three counts after the court ruled that the prosecution had failed to prove that one of the recovered vehicles had been stolen by him.

Passing sentence, Ms Ururu said the teenager's conduct was particularly concerning given his age and the persistence of his criminal behaviour.

"You are very young but your actions defy your age," she said.

"When you were released to your parents after you were initially arrested, you went on to steal again.

"I understand that you are from a broken family but that does not justify your unbecoming behaviour. You will be sent to prison so that you reform."

Prosecutor Ms Concilia Ncube told the court that the teenager targeted Honda Fit vehicles during a series of thefts committed between April and May this year.

The court heard that on April 26, the accused stole a grey Honda Fit from a car park in Entumbane suburb.

Three days later, he allegedly struck again, stealing another Honda Fit from a car park in Nkulumane. He reportedly used the vehicle to pirate passengers at night before abandoning it after it ran out of fuel.

On the following day, the teenager allegedly stole a third Honda Fit from a car park in Emakhandeni suburb.

The court was told that his boldest theft occurred on May 12 when he went to Entumbane Police Station and stole a Honda Fit belonging to a police officer.

He reportedly drove the vehicle around Bulawayo for about a week before dumping it.

Following the string of thefts, detectives from the Vehicle Theft Squad launched investigations that ultimately led to the teenager's arrest.

The case has raised concern over juvenile involvement in serious crimes, particularly motor vehicle theft, with the court emphasising the need for rehabilitation while holding young offenders accountable for their actions.
