Killer Zivhu sparks debate over white governance claims

CONTROVERSIAL former ZANU-PF Chivi South legislator Killer Zivhu has sparked a fresh debate on social media after arguing that white people provide better governance, fight corruption more effectively and are more successful at building nations than African leaders.

In a post on X on Tuesday morning, Zivhu wrote: “White people have better governance, less corruption & build their nations. Anything functional in Africa is managed by whites. SA is proof. Meanwhile African leadership kills citizens & chases them from home. pane murungu pane mabasa, chikapfu, and future.”

The Shona phrase translates roughly to “where there is a white person, there is work, progress and a future”.

Zivhu cited South Africa as an example while criticising African governments over violence against citizens, poor governance and the displacement of communities.

The remarks quickly attracted attention online, with the post generating hundreds of likes and reposts and tens of thousands of views.

Responses were sharply divided, with some users supporting Zivhu's position and arguing that African countries have struggled because of poor leadership and governance.

Some went further, with one respondent claiming that black people were incapable of governing themselves and calling for recolonisation. Others argued that much of the infrastructure in cities such as Harare was developed during the colonial era and that modern African governments had failed to maintain or improve it.

However, Zivhu's critics rejected the suggestion that governance failures could be explained by race. They pointed to corruption scandals in countries governed by white political elites and argued that Africa's challenges were rooted in weak institutions, poor accountability, historical inequalities and failures in governance systems rather than the capabilities of Africans themselves.

Zivhu is a prominent and often polarising figure in Zimbabwean politics. He previously served as the ZANU-PF Member of Parliament for Chivi South before being expelled from the ruling party in 2020 over alleged breaches of party protocol.

He was subsequently readmitted to ZANU-PF and has remained active on social media, where he regularly comments on politics, economic conditions, party affairs, opposition figures and leadership.

His latest comments are consistent with a pattern of provocative online commentary in which he has criticised failures in African governance while highlighting what he considers positive aspects of colonial-era administration and white leadership.

The remarks come amid growing public frustration across Zimbabwe and the wider region over deteriorating infrastructure, poor public services, corruption, unemployment and emigration.

While some users viewed Zivhu's comments as a reflection of genuine frustration with African governments, others accused him of romanticising colonial rule and promoting racial stereotypes.

There had been no official response from ZANU-PF leadership to the comments by Thursday.
