A libidinous Bulawayo prison officer allegedly attacked his wife with a hammer for denying him sex, hours after she had been discharged from hospital.

The woman had been hospitalised after the officer hit her with a hammer following an argument about his first wife.

Stephen Mupande (25), stationed at Khami Maximum Prison let his erection get the better of him, allegedly brutally assaulting his wife Methelina Sibanda (28) on 18 February.

Sibanda is admitted in the Intensive Care Unit at Mpilo Central Hospital.

Mupande appeared before Provincial magistrate Willard Maphios Moyo facing two charges of physical abuse.

He was remanded out of custody to March 2 on $50 bail.

The prosecutor Mufaro Mageza told the court that on Wednesday last week, Mupande's first wife whom he has divorced went to his house and asked him to accompany her to sell a refrigerator that they bought while they were still married.

The court heard that when Mupande returned, an angry Sibanda told him to give his first wife all the property they bought together, so that she would not have an excuse for visiting him.

Mupande, who is allegedly in the habit of "disciplining" his wife with a hammer allegedly took offence and hit her with the weapon on the forehead.
Sibanda fell unconscious and was rushed to Mpilo Central Hospital for treatment.

Mageza said Sibanda was discharged the same day and when she arrived home around midnight, she found Mupande "holding his sexual organ in his hand," demanding sex.

Sibanda allegedly turned him down and Mupande flew into a rage.

He allegedly grabbed the hammer and severely assaulted her all over the body while shouting he would kill her.

The court heard neighbours rushed an unconscious Sibanda back to Mpilo Central Hospital and police were called to arrest Mupande.
