Zanu-PF has recorded an increase in its subscription base this year with more than 500 000 people having registered as members compared to just 139 000 during the same period last year.

According to the party's Central Committee Report to the 12th National People's Conference, the Zanu-PF finance department said the highest number of subscribed members was recorded in the Midlands.

The province saw the number of membership cards sold increasing from 24 809 last year to 161 391 this year. It was followed by Harare, where 91 391 people have so far bought membership cards to signal their allegiance to the party compared to 5 564 last year.

Other provinces such as Mashonaland East now boast a membership of over 101 000, up from the previous 69 761. The party now has a total of 653 950 confirmed card-holders realising US$579 312 in membership fees and subscription in 2011, which signified a 64 percentage increase from last year's US$206 080.

The department said it was certain of its membership base after sending out teams to verify.

"The department of finance sent a verification team to all provinces from 14 March to 1 April 2011. "The terms of reference (for the team) were to inspect the number of cards received by provincial and district co-ordinating committees; district, branch, cell/village and to whom they were issued. The verification programme is ongoing.

The department of finance recommends that provinces should set up similar verification teams that include Commissariat, Women's League and Youth League to monitor, collect and report on membership fees and subscriptions."

The department added that illegal Western sanctions imposed on the country and some senior party members, however, continued to affect the performance of Zanu-PF in meeting its objectives.
