Infertility awareness week highlights global challenge and local solutions

The National Infertility Awareness Week (NIAW), observed globally this way from April 19 to 25 under the theme 'More Than', underscores that infertility is more than a medical diagnosis but a deeply personal journey profoundly shaping lives.

Although founded in the United States in 1989 by RESOLVE: The National Infertility Association, NIAW has become internationally recognised, offering solidarity and education to the one in six people worldwide who face the challenges of infertility.

The week encourages communities to acknowledge the emotional, social and medical dimensions of infertility, while promoting access to care and reducing stigma.

Infertility is defined as the inability to conceive after twelve months of regular, unprotected intercourse. It affects both men and women, with causes that can be biological, environmental or lifestyle-related.

In women, ovulatory disorders, blocked fallopian tubes, endometriosis, uterine abnormalities and age-related decline are among the most common contributors.

With men, low sperm count, poor motility, abnormal morphology, hormonal imbalances and lifestyle factors such as smoking or obesity often play a role.

These realities highlight the importance of timely investigations to identify underlying issues and guide couples toward appropriate interventions.

Locally, couples can access a range of diagnostic options including hormonal profiling, ultrasound scans, hysterosalpingography to assess fallopian tube function, laparoscopy for direct examination and semen analysis for male partners.

Genetic screening and hormonal testing further strengthen the ability to pinpoint causes. Once identified, interventions may involve lifestyle modifications, medical treatments such as hormonal therapy and ovulation induction, or surgical procedures to correct anatomical abnormalities.

Assisted reproductive technologies (ART) such as intrauterine insemination (IUI), in vitro fertilisation (IVF) and intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) provide additional pathways to parenthood for those who require advanced solutions.

Zimbabwe has steadily expanded access to some of these interventions, with IVF Zimbabwe among the centres offering specialised care. The clinic has now surpassed 400 IVF babies, a milestone that reflects both scientific progress and the growing trust of families seeking help.

"Every child born through IVF represents not just medical success, but the fulfilment of a family's dream. Surpassing 400 babies is a testament to our deep desire for continuous improvement and compassion," explained IVF Zimbabwe's Dr Tinovimba Mhlanga.

"Infertility is more than statistics. It is about real people, real struggles and real hope. Our mission is to ensure that couples in Zimbabwe have access to world-class interventions without needing to travel abroad," he added.

This year's theme, 'More Than', resonates deeply with the infertility community. Patients are seen as more than their diagnosis. They are individuals deserving of dignity, empathy and solutions.

The essence of NIAW lies in dismantling stigma, encouraging open dialogue and reminding couples that they are not alone in their journey. Subfertility often carries painful social consequences, including domestic violence, sexually transmitted infections, discrimination and heightened vulnerability to HIV.

Addressing infertility therefore requires not only medical interventions but also a commitment to tackling these interconnected challenges.

National Infertility Awareness Week is not only about raising awareness but also about fostering hope and resilience. In Zimbabwe, the availability of investigations and interventions, alongside milestones such as those achieved by IVF Zimbabwe, demonstrate that local expertise can deliver meaningful outcomes.

As the week unfolds, it serves as a reminder that infertility is a shared challenge across borders and that through awareness, innovation and compassion, countless families can find their path to new beginnings.
