A woman from Chikanga 1 has appeared in court after allegedly spending US$7,600 entrusted to her by her husband for safekeeping.
Elizabeth Pembedza (32) was brought before magistrate Honest Musiiwa facing allegations of converting the money to her own use, leaving her husband, Misheck Walter Mukono (27), counting losses.
According to court proceedings, Mukono handed over the cash to his wife between February and December 2025, trusting her to keep it safe. However, the money reportedly vanished without explanation, sparking shock and disbelief within the couple's community.
The matter, which has drawn widespread attention in Chikanga 1, was prosecuted by Brighton Chiromo, who told the court that the accused acted unlawfully by using the funds for personal purposes.
In her ruling, magistrate Musiiwa sentenced Pembedza to 10 months in prison, wholly suspended on condition that she restitutes the full US$7,600 to the complainant.
This means that failure to repay the money will result in her serving the full jail term.
The case has since become a talking point in the community, highlighting issues of trust and financial accountability within households.
