A UNIVERSITY of Zimbabwe consortium, led by Albert Makochekanwa, will carry out government-funded research into the effects of Western sanctions on the Zimbabwean economy.

The year-long research, which has $150 000 funding, was commissioned by the Higher and Tertiary Education ministry yesterday.

Announcing the winning consortium, a ministry official, John Dehwa, said the research would be used to influence policy formulation in the country after peer review publication.

Higher Education minister Jonathan Moyo said the decision to commission the research had been informed by "a lot of talk on the effects of sanctions mostly on the political front with no real research".

"There can be no question that the sanctions affected the economy because even those who imposed them intended them to have an effect, it is the question of extent that we are looking into," he said.
