350 hours for abortion maid

A housemaid in Willowvale who dumped a foetus in a flash toilet after drinking a concoction to terminate the pregnancy has been ordered to perform 350 hours of community service.
Cecelia Teya, 24, pleaded guilty when she appeared before Mbare magistrate Gladys Moyo charged with unlawful termination of pregnancy and concealing birth of a child.
Initially, she was sentenced to 15 months in prison before five months were suspended or five years on condition of good behaviour. The remaining ten months were suspended on condition she performs 350 hours of community service at Sakambe Clinic, Horde Valley. The State, represented by Lawrence Gangarahwe proved that on May 17, at around 9pm, the informant's husband who is also Teya's employer, used the toilet and after use toed to flash but the water was not flowing as usual.
The following day, at around lam, the informant, Marvellous Mlambo, brought a plumber at their house and advised him of the problem with the toilet. During the course of his duty, the plumber discovered a blockage In the pipe and he pulled it out and realised that it was a foetus.
The plumber informed Mlambo and her husband of what he had seen and discovered and it was suspected that Teya was responsible for that. Mlambo then made a police report leading to the arrest of Teya who later admitted to the offence in court.
The herbs which she drank as concoction to terminate the pregnancy were produced in court as exhibit.
