FAILING to control his anger after seeing his wife dressed in a skimpy skirt and assaulted her with a pot, earned a Zimunya man $50 fine.

Martin Bindura (37) of  Gosho Village under Chief Zimunya appeared before Mutare provincial magistrate, Mr Tendai Mabwe last week facing physical abuse charges as defined in Section 3 (1) (a) of the Domestic Violence Act, Chapter 5:16. He pleaded guilty to the charge, claiming that his intention was not to inflict pain or injure his wife, but to discipline her on her skimpy dressing.

In mitigation, Bindura told the court that his wife, Esnath Boore (35) had disrespected him by putting on a revealing dress which exposed her legs.

"Your Worship, the way she was dressed was not appropriate for a married woman, more so, one who stays in the rural areas. After I advised her to remove the short skirt and put something else on, she told me that she would put on a very tight pair of trousers if she removed the miniskirt.

I asked her to cover her over-exposed legs with a cloth (Zambia), but she would not hear of it. She told me that her dressing was none of my business, yet I am her husband. I was angered by her disrespect and I assaulted her," he said.

Bindura was sentenced to 50 days imprisonment, 30 of which were suspended for five years on condition of good behaviour. The remaining 20 days were wholly suspended on condition that he forks out a $50 fine.

On July 1, Bindura had an altercation with Boore over her wearing of mini-skirts. He assaulted her with open hands several times on the face. He further took a pot and hit her once on her back. Boore sustained painful eyes and a swollen nose. Mr Fletcher Karombe represented the State.
