Mr Lavrov, who is the Russian Foreign Minister and is President Putin's confidante, is leading a delegation which includes his deputy, Mr Mikail Bogdanov and a businessman, Mr Vitali Mashitskii, who owns the Russian part of the Great Dyke Investment Project in Darwendale.

On arrival, Mr Lavrov was received at the airport by his Zimbabwean counterpart, Dr Sibusiso Moyo, Zimbabwean Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Mr Joey Bimba, the Russian Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Mr Sergey Bakarev and Russian embassy staff.

On his was to Zimbabwe, Mr Lavrov passed through Maputo, Mozambique, which also has a long term friendship with Russia.

The Russian Foreign Minister's visit comes amid loud calls by the new leadership in Zimbabwe inviting investors and foreign direct investment to resuscitate the national economy.

Minister Lavrov was last in Zimbabwe in 2014 for the groundbreaking ceremony of the US$4 billion platinum mine in Darwendale.

The Great Dyke platinum investment project, which is one of the biggest investments in the country since 1980, is poised to be jumpstarted by the visit, with renewed commitment made on the deal.
