WHO'S gonna survive!
The introduction of Khulumani FM in Bulawayo to rival Skyz Metro has been welcomed by the locality as it will cater for more local content.
Owned by the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC), the station went live on air last Friday.
Forty percent of the station's programmes will be talk shows which will have engagement with the community giving them a chance to contribute towards building the city and 60 percent is to give the local artistes an opportunity of receiving airplay.
On the other hand it's a fact that Skyz Metro FM has won the hearts of many since it went on air in 2016 proven by the number of awards the station has won to date.
Skyz Metro boasts of a 2017 Best Media House gong from the Bulawayo Arts Award as well as a New Business Award of the same year at the Zimbabwe National Chamber Committee (ZNCC) awards, apart from solo awards won by their presenters on different award ceremonies.
Isititshi Sabantu as Skyz Metro is affectionately known will have to contend with vying for the same spotlight with Khulumani FM broadcasting on the 95.0mghz frequency.
As far as advertising is concerned Khulumani FM is bound to lead the race as the station will have a backup from advertisers who use ZBC channels as a passage of advertising their products both on local and national levels.
Skyz Metro FM station manager Godwin Phiri said their station is ready to face the competition despite Khulumani FM's advertising backup.
"Since we started broadcasting about a year-and-a-half ago we have been serving our clients with quality form and platform for advertising. We are sure we won't lose our advertisers because they are satisfied with us and we have good relations with them," he said.
"We have done a lot for the Bulawayo community as we were the first to give them a fresh line-up of programming which talks directly to them. We are also the first Zimbabwean radio station to have its own awards to honour local artistes, therefore, we are not scared of any competition," he said.
ZBC acting Public Relations manager Firstme Vitori revealed the presenters and anchors who will spearhead programmes for the station and the listeners who have since taken their precious time to sample the FM's broadcasting style can testify about the talent the station possesses.
Skyz Metro's Babongile Sikhonjwa who anchors Vuka Vuka breakfast show will have to up his game so that the station won't lose morning listenership to Khulumani's vibrant Chu Nompulampuli breakfast show hosted by Exult Ncube.
The famous Ndebele news reader Kundai Midzo Shamuyarira should watch out as there is a new talented breed in town in the names of Sakeleni Nxumalo and Khanyile Sithole who have the skills of keeping the listeners mesmerised with their broadcasting style.
Local artistes such as Jeys Marabini, award winning hip-hop star Cal_vin, gospel ensemble Vocal X, Nceku the comedian and Hwabaraty welcomed the opening of Khulumani FM.
