After bagging three awards in a space of three months, Bulawayo-based musician Novuyo Seagirl (27) still insists she hasn't reached her zenith.
Seagirl last week won the Best House Music Song of the Year award for the song AEIOU, which she did with Lance Hebron, at the inaugural Star FM Music Awards in Harare. This made it her third gong after walking away with the Best Female Artiste and the Best House Music awards at the Skyz Metro FM Music Awards held in December in Bulawayo.
"I am happy to have won the award after being nominated among seasoned artistes like Skaiva and Sandra Ndebele. The award means a lot to me and I can't say I have arrived, but it's a start of a long and tiring journey," Seargil said.
"Now I am encouraged and hyped up to do more work, to keep and better the standards that I have set, I need to do more work now."
Seagirl described the song AEIOU as an expression of love.
"It's how someone makes you go crazy in translation of the vowels AEIOU, where the chorus is born," she said.
"In the first verse, the letters are broken down, with the letter A translating to Amazing is the way you look, E – Everything that you do just makes me wild, I – If I lose you I will lose my mind, O – Only you can have me the way you want, U-U [You] give me butterflies and goose bumps.
"You won't believe we recorded the song using a Skype microphone covered with my scarf, making a makeshift condenser microphone.
"Little did we know a hit was in the making and it wasn't even in a fancy studio, but in a classroom. We didn't have a proper studio set-up, but we had a laptop and a Skype microphone that could capture vocals as much as a proper microphone.
"So, it turned out our option was to make do with what we had at that moment. The zeal to record at that instant was there, so we couldn't let that vibe and energy go to waste," she said.
Seagirl started singing at a tender age with her twin sister. They would compose songs in the bathroom and sing them the same day at church.
In 2009 they focused on other arts facets like dancing and acting, till 2014 when they formed an all-female three-member group named One Stand Band. She is the reigning Star Brite talent show national winner.
Seagirl released a new track called Bambelela last week, which features her twin sister.
The musician is working on an album titled Love, Bitter and Sweet. She is studying towards a diploma in Music Production and Sound Engineering at the College of Creative Arts Africa, an affiliate of Midlands State University.
