A gold mine brute convicted last week over a savage attack on another man, which was captured on video, will not serve any jail time.

Litten Chikowore, 35, of Waverely in Kadoma, was sentenced to eight months in jail by Kadoma magistrate Takudzwa Gwazemba on Monday, but the whole sentence was conditionally suspended.

Five months were set aside on condition he performs 175 hours of community service at Kadoma General Hospital, and a further three months were suspended on condition of good behaviour.

Chikowore, the director of Kinum Start Mining in Kadoma, handed himself over to the police after a shocking 45-minute video circulated widely online, showing him repeatedly striking 30-year-old Pedzisai Mangisi with a baton stick. At one point in the video, he asks a friend to bring "electricity" – apparently to continue the assault with electric shocks.

The incident happened in November last year, although the video only recently emerged.

Chikowore, who pleaded guilty when he appeared in court last Friday, told the magistrate he "lost it" after Mangisi allegedly stole 400 grammes of gold from him. He claimed to have reported him to the police who advised him to seek an out-of-court settlement.
