Three former learners at Mavhudzi High School have each been sentenced to two months' imprisonment following a violent group assault on a fellow student, in a ruling described as a strong warning against school-based violence.

Tatenda Severa (20), Trevor Mushore (19) and Lawrence Chamunorwa (20) were convicted of assault after attacking a 19-year-old schoolmate on October 24, 2025 at around 8pm on the school premises in Nyazura.

The trio, who were Upper Six learners at the time, appeared before Rusape magistrate Mr Tendai Mahwe facing charges under Section 89 (1) (a) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act (Chapter 9:23).

They were not legally represented and pleaded guilty to the charge.

Passing sentence at Rusape Magistrates' Court, Mr Mahwe said the punishment was meant to send a clear message that bullying and physical aggression in schools carry serious legal consequences.

Each accused was fined US$300 or, in default of payment, to serve 60 days in prison. In addition, a further three-month jail term was wholly suspended on condition that they do not commit any offence involving violence within the next five years.

Although the court noted that the three had no previous convictions and had shown remorse, it emphasised the gravity of the offence.

Prosecutor Ms Faith Mutukwa told the court that the accused severely assaulted the Form Five learner using open hands and booted feet, repeatedly striking him on the face and head. The assault only stopped when the complainant lost consciousness.

According to the State, the attack stemmed from accusations that the victim had disrespected the Upper Six learners by being in a romantic relationship with an Upper Six girl.

On the night in question, the three accused allegedly went to the complainant's dormitory where he was lying on his bed with other learners present. A school prefect reportedly entered the room and warned Lower Six learners against engaging in relationships with Upper Six girls.

Severa allegedly grabbed the complainant by the leg and pulled him off the bed, causing him to fall. Mushore then slapped him repeatedly on the face. When the complainant attempted to shield himself, Severa allegedly restrained him, allowing further blows.

Chamunorwa is said to have joined in, kicking the complainant on the head and back. The court heard that Mushore then pushed the complainant back onto his bed, after which he lost consciousness for approximately 20 minutes.

The victim reportedly sustained headaches and chest pains and was medically examined. A medical report was produced as evidence in court.

The case has sparked broader debate about learner safety and discipline in schools, with parents and community leaders calling for stronger anti-bullying measures, enhanced reporting systems and mandatory awareness programmes to prevent similar incidents.

Education stakeholders have also urged authorities to intensify counselling services and reinforce school policies to promote a safer and more respectful learning environment across the province.
