President Mugabe has promoted 596 police officers to various ranks.

The new ranks are with effect from June 10.

Chief police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Wayne Bvudzijena yesterday confirmed the promotions.

Of the 596 officers, 28 were promoted from the rank of Assistant Inspector to Chief Superintendent.

"Those who were promoted from the rank of assistant inspector to chief superintendent have their own grades and that is why they were moved to that rank," he said.

Snr Asst Comm Bvudzijena said there were 70 officers who were promoted to the rank of superintendent. They are to be confirmed on Wednesday and they include Masvingo police spokesperson Tinaye Matake.

Another 152 officers have also been promoted to chief inspectors and they include spokespersons Blessmore Chishaka, James Sabau, Augustine

Zimbili, Shelter Rufu, Tafataona Dzirutwe and the Outpost Editor Resistance Ncube.

Snr Asst Comm Bvudzijena said 346 officers were promoted to the rank of inspector from assistant inspector.

He said the police officers undertook promotional examinations for them to get the new posts.

"Its about the knowledge of legislation and police powers and so on," said Snr Asst Comm Bvudzijena.

"After the examinations they go through assessments and after that they go through board interviews where recommendations would be made."

Snr Asst Comm Bvudzijena said those who fail the examinations would not proceed to the next levels. The promoted officers will soon be transferred to different stations.
