A self-styled faith healer appeared in court on allegations of raping a married woman under the guise of cleansing her of evil spirits. Masimba Chirayi (41) of Epworth in Harare appeared before Harare magistrate Mr Dennis Mangosi charged with rape. He was not asked to plead to the charges and was remanded to today for bail application.
Chirayi, known as a pastor in his neighbourhood, allegedly raped a 20-year-old woman whose name has been withheld for legal reasons.
According to the State, Chirayi used to perform spiritual healing sessions on the woman several separate times. It is said that on September 20 this year, at 8am the woman visited Chirayi at his place of residence for a healing session. Chirayi allegedly told her that the healing session for that day needed a secluded bush area.
He then allegedly drove her to a bush area near Muza Farm in Epworth where he asked the woman to remove her pants to allow him to rub some snuff (bute) on her privates whilst they were still in his car. The woman complied, according to the State. He allegedly told the woman to disembark from the car and wait for him at the nearby rocks. He allegedly followed her and sat beside her.
Chirayi then instructed the woman to lie down on her back, lift her blouse and started rubbing the snuff on her stomach. He allegedly mounted on top of the woman forcing her to shove him away. Chirayi is said to have told the woman to be vigilant and allow him to complete the healing session.
The self-styled faith healer is alleged to have asked the woman to stand up before he took her to another rock, which was further away from the road. He allegedly instructed her to lie on the ground, lift and spread her legs. Chirayi is alleged to have unzipped his trousers and ordered the woman to rub some snuff on his manhood and also on her privates.
The woman again complied, according to the State. It is said that the woman asked Chirayi to stop his actions, but he told her to wait until he finishes. Chirayi is also said to have told the woman to lie on her left side before he raped her.
