Headmaster launches witch-hunt

Musengezi High School head George Rambanepasi and bursar Sharon Kapende are embroiled in controversy over alleged financial mismanagement, particularly concerning a US$12,000 repair scandal involving Rambanepasi's Toyota Hilux GD-6 vehicle.
Following an investigative report exposing the misuse of school funds, Rambanepasi has reportedly initiated a "witch-hunt" by summoning outgoing School Development Committee (SDC) members to write reports on the scandal. This move, overseen by district education officers, has drawn attention to District Officer Dumisani Mbofana, who was allegedly pressured to take action against Rambanepasi but failed to act promptly.
An audit conducted in early 2024 revealed anomalies within the school's financial management, including significant payments made for vehicle repairs without following government tender procedures.
The audit highlighted a rift between SDC members and Rambanepasi, exacerbated by the bursar's alleged abuse of power, including unauthorized purchases and violations of procurement protocols. Disgruntled parents have accused Rambanepasi and Kapende of inflating costs and mismanaging school finances, pointing to irregularities in purchasing uniforms and managing a purportedly inflated SDC wages bill.
The controversy has escalated further with Rambanepasi reportedly planning legal action against the journalist who exposed the scandal, seeking to uncover their sources. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education has confirmed ongoing investigations into the matter, amidst broader concerns over management practices and allegations of bullying at Musengezi High School.
