3 hrs ago | Views
Two men from Bulawayo's Tshabalala suburb, Spencer Bongani Dzitiro (33) and Malvin Mpofu (23), appeared before the Bulawayo Regional Magistrate's Court facing robbery charges.
The pair allegedly tricked a motorist, Edward Muchenjekwa, into giving them a lift before violently robbing him of his blue Honda Fit vehicle, ZAR 100 in cash, and a Samsung A12 cellphone.
The case, presided over by Magistrate Sibonginkosi Mnkandla, has been postponed to November 28 for judgment.
Details of the Incident
Prosecutor Nomthandazo Mafu told the court that the incident occurred on September 3 at around 9 PM. Muchenjekwa was driving his Honda Fit from Emganwini to Bulawayo's Central Business District (CBD) when he picked up a passenger heading to Cowdray Park.
At the intersection of Siyephambili Drive and Nketa Drive, Muchenjekwa stopped to pick up the two accused, who claimed they were traveling to D Square in Njube.
Upon reaching their destination, the accused changed their plans, instructing Muchenjekwa to head toward the CBD but first drop off the other passenger at the Cowdray Park turn-off.
The Robbery
After dropping off the Cowdray Park passenger, Muchenjekwa was left alone with the two accused. As he drove towards the CBD, one of the accused, seated in the back, allegedly attacked him.
"At the Siyephambili Drive and Luveve Road intersection, one of the accused grabbed the complainant from behind and struck him on the forehead twice with an unknown object," said Mafu.
The victim managed to escape the vehicle while it was still in motion, and the accused drove off at high speed toward the Kelvin Industrial Site.
Police Intervention
The stolen vehicle was later found abandoned in an isolated area. A police report led to the swift arrest of Dzitiro and Mpofu.
The duo remains in custody, awaiting the court's verdict.
