4 hrs ago | Views
A tragic accident involving three buses on the Masvingo-Beitbridge Highway near Bubi claimed two lives and left two others seriously injured early Sunday morning.
The incident, which occurred at the 192km peg along the highway, was triggered by a chain of events involving a Tombs Transport bus, a Mbokodo Transport bus, and a Rimbi Transport bus.
Sequence of Events
The accident began around 4 a.m. when a Tombs Transport bus struck a donkey and developed a mechanical fault. The driver pulled off the road to address the issue, leaving the bus stationary.
Shortly thereafter, a Mbokodo Transport bus stopped to assist stranded passengers from the Tombs bus.
A speeding Rimbi Transport bus then lost control and collided with the trailer of the Tombs bus, causing it to overturn. The Rimbi bus subsequently hit the Mbokodo bus, which also overturned, injuring two passengers.
Casualties
The first deceased, a passenger in the Tombs bus, died instantly after being struck by the trailer during the collision. The second victim, a passenger in the Rimbi bus, died after jumping out of the vehicle through a window when it veered off the road.
The injured passengers were transported to Beitbridge District Hospital for treatment.
Police Statement
Masvingo provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa, confirmed the incident and provided details on the aftermath:
“The bodies of the deceased and the injured were all taken to Beitbridge District Hospital."
Uncertainty Surrounding Destinations
It remains unclear where all three buses were headed at the time of the accident.
This incident serves as a grim reminder of the dangers of speeding and the need for extra caution, especially on busy highways during the festive season. Authorities are urging drivers to exercise vigilance to prevent further tragedies on the nation's roads.
