Zimbabwe MPs defraud Parliament
3 hrs ago | Views

A group of ZANU-PF urban lawmakers including Martin Matinyanya (Mbare constituency), Trymore Kanopula (Harare South), and opposition legislator Richard Tsvangirai (Norton) among others, are embroiled in corruption scandals involving multiple allowance claims, fuel coupons laundering, requisitions and reimbursement between January 2024 to February 2025, with Zimbabwe's Parliament so far loosijg over one million United States dollars (US$1 million).
In an investigation by Bulawayo24.com crew amongst Harare's major hotels (names supplied) with respective room numbers allocated to various lawmakers, the members regularly secure accommodation (despite the fact that they are not entitled to it), solicit unlimited fuel coupons from Parliament and took daily allowances.
At least two hotel management close sources confirmed that amongst the lawmakers, each would sometimes secure two rooms using multiple identification cards.
"Yes sometime ago we noticed that our records would reflect that the hotel is fully booked despite the fact that the number of lawmakers from outside Harare fail to secure accommodation when they try to check-in. We know three MPs so far who book using different identity cards and there would always be full occupancy recorded in those respective rooms," the source said.
"This abnormality has now been normalised and we can't confront an MP who is our guest over the issue. Other lawmakers from outside Harare fail to secure accommodation and it is none of our business to expose them, but just forwarding their bills and expenses to relevant authority, which is the Parliament," the source added.
According to information gathered from Parliament records, legislators within Harare collected the same fuel allocation (coupons) meant for furthest constituencies whilst also entitled to daily allowances.
"Yes we received reports about groups of legislators who have been corrupt for quite sometime, but we can't give you the total losses incurred during their unethical conduct," one of the source from Parliament said.
"We confronted them and it seems as if they are not stopping from the corrupt activities. They are looting everything including fuel allocations. They are not entitled to accommodation, but they are always booked amongst local hotels while collecting daily allowances again," the source added.
