President Emmerson Mnangagwa is set to officially open the Trabablas Interchange today, a major infrastructure project that replaces the notorious Mbudzi Roundabout, long known as a traffic bottleneck in Harare.

For years, the Mbudzi Roundabout was a major choke point, particularly during peak hours, causing significant delays and frequent accidents for commuters navigating Simon Mazorodze Road and its connecting routes such as Chitungwiza and High Glen roads.

The newly constructed multi-level flyover is designed to ease traffic flow, expanding lanes and improving pedestrian walkways. Construction began in January 2022, with a budget allocation of US$88 million.

"Traffic is flowing better and it feels a lot more organised," said Tendai Mandebvu, a daily commuter from Highfield, expressing relief at the improved road conditions.

Sharon Makore, a Glen Norah resident, also welcomed the development, hoping the new interchange will help reduce petty crime in the area. "It was always chaotic around the roundabout and a lot of people lost their phones and wallets there," she said. "With a better road design and control, things seem to be improving."

Once fully operational, the Trabablas Interchange is expected to accommodate thousands of vehicles daily, significantly improving access to southern parts of Harare and beyond.

The interchange's new name, Trabablas, pays tribute to President Mnangagwa's liberation war nom de guerre, replacing the former Mbudzi Roundabout name and symbolising a fresh start for the area's transport infrastructure.
