Mnangagwa arrives in Rome ahead of Vatican meeting

President Emmerson Mnangagwa arrived in Rome, Italy, on Saturday morning ahead of a bilateral meeting with His Holiness Pope Leo XIV at the Vatican scheduled for today.
The discussions are expected to focus on cooperation between the Vatican and Zimbabwe on socio-economic initiatives, including the church's longstanding contributions to education and healthcare through the construction of schools and hospitals.
At Ciampino International Airport, President Mnangagwa was welcomed by Zimbabwe's Ambassador to the Vatican, Dr Sekai Nzenza, Ambassador to Italy Mrs Mietani Chauke, Vatican officials, embassy staff, and senior government officials.
The President is accompanied by Foreign Affairs and International Trade Minister Professor Amon Murwira, Deputy Chief Secretary in the Office of the President and Cabinet responsible for Presidential Communications Mr George Charamba, and other senior officials.
The leaders are also expected to discuss geopolitical issues and the Vatican's role in promoting global peace. The Roman Catholic Church has historically been a respected voice in international affairs and a key partner in socio-economic development in Zimbabwe.
