Rutendo Hazel Chiveso (42), director of Sinyochiv Procurement Services (Pvt) Ltd Zimbabwe, appeared in Harare Magistrates’ Court yesterday over allegations of defrauding the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (Zimra) of US$79 986. She was granted US$300 bail by Magistrate Marehwanazvo Gofa.
Court documents state that in March and April this year, Chiveso, through her company, imported 1 143 cartons of clothes, foam balls, fake flowers, and other goods weighing 48 020kg from Long Grand Enterprises Limited, Hong Kong. The shipment was loaded into two containers at CMA CGM and sealed in China for transport to Beira, Mozambique, before reaching Harare.
The State alleges that Chiveso, in collusion with clearing agent Natural Manyeku of Sequency Freight Pvt Limited, falsified the bill of lading and invoice to declare the consignment as agricultural equipment, which is exempt from duty. Manyeku then subcontracted With You Customs Clearing to process Zimra clearance at Forbes Border Post in Mutare.
In July, the clearing company processed the shipment under bill entries C16697 and C18711, resulting in Zimra exempting the consignment from paying import duty of US$79 986,58. The case continues as investigations into the alleged fraud proceed.
