Five artisanal miners are feared trapped underground after a shaft collapsed at Mamini, Umsasa Farm in Mazowe on Sunday.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirmed the accident, saying rescue operations were underway to reach the miners, who were working in a 20-metre-deep shaft when it gave way.

"The ZRP confirms a mine accident which occurred at Mamini, Umsasa Farm, Mazowe on 28 September 2025, where five artisanal miners were trapped after a 20m deep shaft in which they were mining collapsed. Rescuing teams are currently on the ground. More details will be released in due course," the police statement read.

The incident highlights ongoing safety concerns in Zimbabwe's small-scale mining sector, where informal operations are widespread and safety standards often neglected.

Such accidents are frequent in gold-rich areas like Mazowe, Shamva and parts of the Midlands, where artisanal miners risk their lives in poorly supported shafts to extract gold.
