VILLAGERS in Piki village, Mutare, were left stunned after 19-year-old Carrington Mutasa was convicted for sexually assaulting a chicken.

Mutasa appeared before Mutare Magistrates' Court, where he was sentenced to eight months in prison. Three months of the sentence were suspended for five years, while the remaining five months were converted to 175 hours of community service.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ), the incident occurred on September 16 at around 5:30pm when Mutasa entered his neighbour's homestead while no one was home. He grabbed a hen from the fowl run and sexually violated it.

The complainant's granddaughter witnessed Mutasa leaving the fowl run in a flustered state and alerted her grandmother. Upon inspection, the grandmother found that one hen had sustained a severe wound on its cloaca area. Neighbours apprehended Mutasa, who later confessed to the act.

The incident has left the community deeply disturbed, with residents saying they will never view their poultry the same way again.

In a related case in Figtree, Matabeleland South province, 33-year-old Brighton Mkandla was arrested for allegedly sexually abusing three goats, resulting in the deaths of two of the animals. Mkandla reportedly assaulted goats belonging to Cecilia Sibanda (85) and Mayibongwe Ndlovu (28), and was caught in the act with a third goat owned by Elmon Ndlovu (65).
