The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has dismissed as false and misleading an online news report claiming that security agents confiscated condoms from mourners during the burial of national hero Mpandasekwa Mzheri at the National Heroes Acre on Monday.

The article, titled "Public Outrage Over Condom Confiscation at National Heroes Acre Funeral," alleged that officers from the Central Intelligence Organisation (CIO) and the police conducted body searches on attendees and seized condoms from some mourners.

Citing unnamed sources, the report suggested that the alleged searches provoked outrage, with some mourners reportedly describing the supposed actions as "ridiculous" and an infringement on personal rights.

However, in a statement issued on Tuesday, the ZRP categorically denied the claims, stating that no such searches were conducted at the national shrine.

"The ZRP is not aware of any such searches or incidents that allegedly took place. No ZRP officers or security personnel were involved in any form of such searches at the mentioned event," the statement read.

The police further urged anyone who claims to have been searched or had condoms confiscated to come forward and lodge an official report to enable proper investigations.

The ZRP also condemned the publication for spreading falsehoods and for using AI-generated images in an apparent attempt to tarnish the reputation of both the police service and the Government.

"The ZRP condemns such unprofessional conduct in publishing misleading information and manipulating images to misinform the public," the statement added.

Authorities have since warned media organisations and social media users against fabricating or circulating unverified claims about national events, saying such actions undermine public trust and national institutions.
